If you are planning to take your pet on a trip with you, it is important to be informed and have the necessary documents prepared. Please contact the airlines, embassy of the country to which you are traveling, and the APHIS website well ahead of your planned travel dates. Hawaii has specific rules and it can take up to 6 months to get a pet ready to fly to Hawaii. Each country has specific rules and requirements for pets that are entering the country. Some health papers must be mailed by overnight express to New York for certification. Please be very proactive when you want to take your pet with you on a trip.

Acquiring Health & Travel Certificates

Pets who are crossing over country or state borders need appropriate paperwork. Pets traveling via air need proper documentation to be allowed on the airplane. Our veterinarians can provide such documents.

These certificates are important not only because they are required by law, but for the safety of your pet, the health of other pets, and the environments to which they are traveling. Before one of our veterinarians can issue a certificate, they must ensure the following:

  • The pet is disease-free
  • They are strong and healthy enough to fly safely
  • They have received the proper vaccinations, microchipping, and parasite preventions for the location where they are traveling to.

Depending on your destination, we highly recommend calling at least one month in advance to schedule an appointment to obtain your pet’s travel certificate. NOTE: Some destinations take over 6 months of preparation and testing prior to permitting a pet to enter the country!

If possible, see if your pet can fly in the cabin with you. If not, avoid flights that may endure extremely hot or cold temperatures. Make sure to provide them with plenty of space and water.
